Cómo hacer que una imagen se mueva mientras se escucha presionar una tecla en Java.

Estoy empezando a aprender programación en Java y creo que es genial aprender Java a través del desarrollo de juegos. Sé cómo dibujar una imagen y escuchar la pulsación de una tecla y luego mover esa imagen. Pero, ¿es posible hacer que la imagen se mueva hacia adelante y hacia atrás en la ventana mientras la ventana escucha la pulsación de una tecla? Por ejemplo, mientras la imagen u objeto (como una nave espacial) se mueve de izquierda a derecha en la ventana, si presiono la tecla espaciadora, se disparará un láser en la parte inferior de la pantalla (genial, eh: D). Pero básicamente solo quiero saber cómo hacer que la imagen se mueva de izquierda a derecha mientras la ventana escucha la pulsación de una tecla.

Estoy pensando en agregar un detector de claves a mi ventana y luego activar un bucle infinito para mover la imagen. ¿O necesito aprender a enhebrar para que otro hilo mueva el objeto?
